Hessian Road Renovation

Originally built by noted local architect William Hale for his mother, this formerly 1300 square foot house is now nearly 4700 square feet. The challenge of nearly tripling the the size of the house was to maintain the cottage scale of the house from the street and preserve the integrity of the original design.

Historic log cabin restored

Clad in board and batten siding this derelict farm cabin once slated for demolition was saved when chestnut timbers were exposed beneath the boarding. Further investigation and removal of the siding revealed a log cabin dating from the mid nineteenth century. The log cabin was fashioned with a stone foundation to halt and prevent further decay of timbers and was completely restored using vintage materials.

Virginia Barn Restoration

Constructed in 1790 by William Douglas Meriweather this barn originally contained a new threshing machine that Thomas Jefferson wrote about visiting in 1796. More than two centuries later this barn still stands as a testament to how well is was built and is the oldest standing barn in Albemarle County.

In 2016 careful restorations were made to the barn. Modern materials were removed to expose original pegged timber floors, the original roof framing was reconstructed, reclaimed pine siding installed and stone foundations were repaired. Craig Jacobs, a master of old buildings, executed the restoration work and brought a wealth of vintage materials and vintage construction know-how to preserve the most architecturally significant barn in Albemarle County.

Guest Cottage Renovation

Used as a farm manager’s house for the last 100 years this cottage was slated for demolition unless its character could be improved to match the surrounding historic farm. With a mandate to add character and charm, dilapidated additions were removed and the building was raised so a proper foundation could be installed. Porches on both sides of the house were added and the roofs were unified under a gracefully curved roof. New windows and doors were fabricated and the interior was completely updated. Infused with traditional details and some adjustment of proportion the cottage is sure to charm guests for another generation and retain its place in the farm’s history.

Making wonderful spaces

We believe that good spaces can become wonderful spaces when we collaborate with interior designers in the early stages of a project. Furniture, fabrics, color, architectural finishes and details are all design elements that come together in perfect harmony to make a place truly unique.
